Kingwood Women's Club was founded in 1985 in Kingwood, Texas, a suburb of Houston, with the goal of providing volunteers to perform service through various community organizations. KWC, which now has over 100 active members, has exceeded its original goal and has been able to add generous donations to local organizations as part of its community service.
Our logo, the dogwood, has four petals, which symbolize our COMMITMENT, COMMUNITY, CHARITY AND CAMARADERIE. These four concepts have merged to make Kingwood Women's Club bloom in our community. We are COMITTED to our COMMUNITY, we do CHARITABLE works within it and we have built a marvelous spirit of CAMARADERIE among us.
Club projects focus on areas of community need, social welfare and education. Projects include:- Humble Area Assistance Ministries, a social services network for the needy
- Friends of the Library Kingwood, the fundraising group for the Kingwood Library
- FamilyTime, a resale shop supporting The Door
- Society of St. Stephen, a food and clothing pantry for the needy
- Local elementary schools, where members provide mentoring and clothing to needy children as well as teacher support
- Kingwood College scholarships
- Project Mammogram, a breast diagnostic program of Northeast Hospital Foundation,
- Feed My Lambs, a program to provide lunch for shut-ins
- Kingwood Pines Hospital, a mental health facility for children
- Safe Zone, a program providing instruction in study skills and homework assistance to children in Houston’s 3rd Ward
The club's newest enterprise is "Project Mammogram." This program, administered through Northeast Hospital Foundation, helps women who either do not have insurance or whose incomes are not low enough to qualify for Medicaid to get mammograms or ultrasounds. Kingwood Women's Club was able to provide the initial $5000 donation in 2001 to establish "Project Mammogram" because of the overwhelming success of our annual fundraiser. Through the 2007 – 2008 Club year, Kingwood Women’s Club has donated a total of $73,263 to Project Mammogram.
Project Mammogram was selected for an oral presentation at The Susan G. Komen Foundation’s eighth annual Mission Conference, A Promise in Action, which was held at The Grand Hyatt in Washington, DC, June 5 – 7, 2005. Two of our members made the presentation which included the goals achieved and the crucial role of Kingwood Women’s Club’s funding and volunteer time for the project.
Kingwood Women's Club holds an annual Holiday Marketplace and luncheon in the fall to raise funds for distribution to our area philanthropies. This year's event will be Monday, October 27, 2008 and Tuesday, October 28, 2008 at the Humble Civic Center. This shopping event features antiques, specialty foods, clothing, jewelry, handmade Christmas items and home accessories from a wide range of vendors. Many raffle items are also available. Event or raffle tickets and vendor information can be obtained by contacting the club at kwcweb@aol.com
